Day Three 2022 UAW Region 8 Summer School

Day Three of the 2022 UAW Region 8 Summer School kicked off with a welcome from Assistant Director Tim Smith. Tim opened the section discussing the UAW Region 8 Website and covered the different sections and the information there.

Assistant Director Smith went on to talk about how those of us in Region 8 are a family. He recounted the story of Local 1853 Chairman Danny Taylor who recently passed away and the impact that had on the local and region.

UAW Region 8 Education Representative Jason Thomas came forward to present the UAW Educational Report. “Education is one of the most important things we do in the UAW,” Jason stated. “You are participating in education by attending summer school. I am one of eight education representatives for 400,000 active members. We need everyone who gets a chance to participate in one of our educational conferences to go back and share what they learned with their fellow members. When we educate others we must remember - If you tell me I will forget- if you teach me I will remember- if you involve me I will understand.”

Jason covered the programs available through the UAW Education Department.  There are a number of online programs that are available to members and Jason discussed those. He also covered the UAW Family Scholarship Program that is held each year at the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center at Black Lake.

The delegates then returned to the classroom classes for the remainder of the day. One addition today was a class for teenagers attending as guest. “It says a lot about these young people,” Assistant Director Tim Smith said. “They gave up time on this beautiful beach to learn about labor and they are to be commended for it.
